Knowledge transfer

One of the main needs for the development of professional and sustainable seaweed aquaculture in Chile, is the biological knowledge of seaweed. MASH transfer activities include:

  • Training courses
  • Pilot experiments
  • Certified strains

TRAINING COURSES IN ISOLATION, CULTIVATION AND REPRODUCTION OF ALGAE

Courses aimed at seaweed farmers, seedling providers and marine biologists. Its objective is to transfer basic and/or advance knowledge on reproduction techniques, hatchery production and detection tools for relevant traits for production, repopulation and restoration applications.

PILOT EXPERIMENTS IN SEA FARMING

The objective of these experiments is applied research results of MASH in real farming conditions, and generate collaborations between producers and scientists.

Certified strains

The MASH Nucleus has a germplasm seaweed bank of more than 3,000 strains of G. chilensis and M. pyrifera, which are mainly used for research. In parallel, MASH, through the collaboration with other partners, seeks to transform this seaweed germplasm into a source of certified strains for aquaculture, in order to promote genetic improvement and pathogen-free production programs.
