He uses microscopy, pharmacology, genetics and culture approaches to diagnose new algal diseases and describe new defense mechanisms in red and brown seaweeds.
Natalia has a PhD in Engineering Sciences mention Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology from the Universidad de Chile. She currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM), young researcher at MASH and has projects in collaboration with the Center for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (CeBiB).
Álvaro es bioquímico y Doctor en Biología Celular y Molecular, por la Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh). Actualmente trabaja en el área de investigación de AUSTRAL-omics de la UACh, como investigador postdoctoral.
Sara holds a degree in Marine Sciences from the Universidad de Vigo, Spain, and a Master's degree in Aquaculture with a specialization in Biotechnology from the same university. She has a PhD in Sciences, mention in Conservation and Management of Natural Resources from the Universidad de Los Lagos.
July is a biologist, graduated from the Universidad del Atlántico, Colombia. She holds a Master's degree in Advanced Biotechnology from the University of Malaga, and a PhD in Science, mention in Conservation and Management of Natural Resources from the Universidad de Los Lagos.
Gustavo es biólogo, titulado de la Pontificia Universidad Católica (PUC) y doctor en Ingeniería de Sistemas Complejos, de la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI). Luego de titularse como biólogo, se establece en Copiapó y trabaja durante ocho años como investigador y supervisor en la Compañía Minera Pucobre, colaborando en el desarrollo de la tecnología Biocobre®, patentada el año 2012.
Liliana es microbióloga ambiental y bióloga molecular, su foco de interés son los microorganismos tales como hongos y pseudohongos y su interacción con especies del ambiente marino como las algas.

Carolina has a PhD in Ecology from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and a post-doc in seaweed aquaculture. Served as director of the PhD program in Sciences of Universidad de Los Lagos from 2019 to 2021.
She is currently an Associate Professor at Centro i~mar of the Universidad de Los Lagos and associate researcher at the Centre for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (CeBiB), focusing her research on understanding the implications of different reproductive strategies of seaweeds on the population dynamics under natural and culture conditions.

He has a PhD in Sciences from the Université Lille, France, and currently working on the identification of genomic traces of adaptative divergence in kelps along the latitudinal gradient, and how this relates to local population dynamics and mating systems.
Additionally, Sylvain is the co-Director of the International Laboratory UMI-EBEA (Evolutionary Biology and Ecology of Algae) of CNRS.

Pamela is a marine biologist from Universidad de Los Lagos, PhD in Science at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and has a post-doc at the University of Tasmania, Australia. Currently she is and associated professor at Centro i~mar of the Universidad de Los Lagos and Centre for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (CeBiB).
During her PhD and postdoctoral studies, Pamela focused on the physiological response of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera to ocean acidification and temperature, with special emphasis in deciphering how increased CO2 affects its carbon and nitrogen metabolisms, and how nitrogen supply can enhance its thermal tolerance.
Associate professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Materials Science (DIQBM), and researcher at the Centre for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (CeBiB), Universidad de Chile.
She has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Minnesota, and her research focused on the interface between biology and engineering, applying a bioprocess perspective and mathematical models to address biological problems in a more quantitative manner.
Her research interests include mammalian cell culture, cellular engineering, culture media design, bioprocess optimization, metabolic modeling, and development of mechanistic, metabolic and genome scale models for different biological systems. Currently Ziomara leads the Mammalian Cell Culture Lab (MCCL) at CeBiB and serves as Director of Gender and Diversity at the Faculty of Physics Science and Mathematics of Universidad de Chile.

Marie Laure leads a team of postdocs and PhD students, in tight collaboration with French and other international colleagues, to assess genomic signatures of human-induced changes on seaweeds, including the effects of recurrent bottlenecks and selection on partially asexual organisms.

Due to his extensive career, which includes hundreds of publications, participation in projects, seminars and conferences, he has received various distinctions such as the Award for Academic Career, from the Universidad de Los Lagos; the "Honor in Scientia Marina" award, given by the Chilean Society of Marine Sciences. He is a full member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences.

He has a PhD in Marine Biology with a specialization in biochemistry of marine algae cell wall polysaccharide degrading enzymes and biological properties of derived oligosaccharides.
He is a researcher at the Roscoff Biological Station where he has led the "Signaling by oligosaccharides and defense mechanisms of algae" team for more than 15 years. He has published more than 90 scientific articles and 8 patents, including biological properties of seaweed oligosaccharides and novel enzymes from brown algae and marine bacteria.
He has coordinated large national (IDEALG) and European (GENIALG) scientific consortiums, in addition, he is the co-creator and promoter of the international network Safe Seaweed Coalition, hosted by the UN.
Pedro is an aquaculture engineer from the Universidad Austral de Chile, and PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom, trained in seaweed pathology. He uses microscopy, pharmacology, genetics and culture approaches to diagnose new algal diseases and describe new defense mechanisms in red and brown seaweeds.
His interests focus on different aspects of seaweed biology, aimed at understanding alga-pathogen interactions: description of new pathogens, including life cycles, dissemination and infection strategies, nutrition and development; Epidemiological aspects of brown seaweed populations and immunity, and mechanisms of programmed cell death and autophagy.
Additionally, and through the Macroalgae Laboratory of the Universidad Austral de Chile in Puerto Montt, Pedro works on seaweed cultivation technology of brown and red species of commercial interest. Also developing and evaluating the management and repopulation of these species in natural beds, to guarantee environmental sustainability over time.
Natalia has a PhD in Engineering Sciences mention Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology from the Universidad de Chile. She currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM), young researcher at MASH and has projects in collaboration with the Center for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (CeBiB). Her work focuses on the development and application of systems biology tools to study interactions at the metabolic level between different organisms in microbial communities.

Su trabajo se enfoca en la aplicación de herramientas bioinformáticas para investigar la adaptación genética en diferentes organismos asociado a los cambios climáticos globales.
Su trabajo en MASH como investigador joven, lo realiza en colaboración con la investigadora principal del Núcleo, Dra. Marie-Laure Guillemin.

Currently she is a postdoctoral researcher working on the impact of epiphytism in the different phases of the life cycle of the red alga Gracilaria chilensis and its effect on physiological responses, sponsored by Dr. Carolina Camus.
Her research line is focused on the study of the red seaweed Gracilaria chilensis to understand the factors that determine and restrict the productivity of this species under culture conditions.

From March 2020 to March 2021, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN). At UCN she currently works as Lab manager of the Laboratory of Molecular Ecology and Applied Microbiology, and teaches undergraduate classes and participates as advisor of undergraduate and master students. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Universidad de Playa Ancha, co-sponsored by Dr. Alejandro Buschmann.
En su doctorado en la ULagos abordó el tema de las comunidades bacterianas epífitas asociadas a Macrocystis pyrifera, considerando el efecto del nitrógeno en la interacción bacteria-macroalga.
Actualmente realiza un postdoctorado adjudicado con ANID en la Universidad de Playa Ancha.

Entre 2011 y 2018, Gustavo trabaja como Lab Manager en el laboratorio de Bioingeniería de la UAI, donde hasta la fecha imparte clases de pregrado y postgrado en dicha universidad sobre Microbiología, Complejidad Biológica y Social, Sustentabilidad, Regulación y Gestión Ambiental.
Desde el 2019 y hasta marzo de 2023, Gustavo se desempeña como post-doctorante en CAPES-UC y en la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias de la UAI. Actualmente, se unió al equipo de investigación del Centro GEMA de la Universidad Mayor, como post-doctorante asociado al Núcleo Milenio MASH, equipo en el cual aportará tanto con sus conocimientos relacionados a los sistemas complejos, como con sus conocimientos prácticos en programación y ciencia de datos.
Liliana es microbióloga ambiental y bióloga molecular, su foco de interés son los microorganismos tales como hongos y pseudohongos y su interacción con especies del ambiente marino como las algas.
Liliana obtuvo un PhD en Biología Molecular en la Universidad de Aberdeen, Reino Unido y previamente obtuvo un MSc en Ecología Marina Aplicada y Pesquerías en la misma universidad británica. En la actualidad se desempeña como investigadora post doctoral del Centro i~mar de la Universidad de Los Lagos.
Dentro de sus investigaciones actuales- donde se desempeña como co-investigadora- destacan los proyectos TROY y BASILIK, financiados por el Instituto Antártico Chileno (INACH) y Safe Seaweed Coalition, respectivamente. Su rol en estas iniciativas contempla el estudio de microorganismos eucariontes asociados a algas e invertebrados marinos. Ella estudia estos microrganismos desde su biología, a través de aislamiento-cultivo, caracterización y filogenética, hasta elucidar su relación simbiótica con sus huéspedes, usando respuestas moleculares y fisiológicas.
Sebastián es un profesional con formación en Ingeniería Civil en Biotecnología y actualmente cursa el Doctorado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería, con mención en Ingeniería Química y Biotecnología en la Universidad de Chile. Su trabajo de pregrado se centró en un meta-análisis de datos transcriptómicos, buscando patrones de interacción en diferentes sistemas simbióticos entre eucariontes y procariontes.
En su proyecto doctoral, Sebastián está desarrollando un método innovador para mejorar la simulación de modelos metabólicos de holobiontes. Este método integra datos meta-transcriptómicos y se aplica en el estudio de la interacción entre algas y microbiotas. Su enfoque multidisciplinario en biotecnología y bioinformática destaca su capacidad para contribuir significativamente en el campo de la ingeniería biológica.
Cristián está dedicado al estudio de la biodiversidad marina, abarcando desde su base genética hasta su interacción con el entorno. Entre sus áreas de interés se destacan la ecología y evolución de las macroalgas, la genómica del paisaje marino y la biogeografía del Océano Austral.
Actualmente, es estudiante del Doctorado en Biología Marina en la Universidad Austral de Chile. Su proyecto de tesis se enfoca en investigar los efectos de la domesticación incipiente en Chile sobre la diversidad genética de la especie Gracilaria chilensis.
Alexis is a Marine Biologist, and currently working on his Master´s thesis at Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh), under the supervision of Dr. Marie Laure Guillemin.
His first professional practice was carried out in the Genetics and Molecular Ecology Laboratory of the Institute of Environmental and Evolutionary Sciences of the Universidad Austral de Chile, with focus on the use of techniques for the analysis of the expression of specific genes.
His second professional practice was carried out in the Laboratory of Ecology and Molecular Biology in Algae, of the Faculty of Life Sciences, of the Universidad Andrés Bello, in which he acquired knowledge of the use of biomarkers for analysis of physiological stress in seaweeds.
Diego is a biologist, with orientation in Biotechnology, from the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina in Peru. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Sciences, mention in Biodiversity and Bioresources, at the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC), Chile under the co-supervision of Dr. Sylvain Faugeron. Diego has worked as a researcher at the Germplasm Bank of Aquatic Organisms (BGOA) of the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe), where he was responsible for the taxonomic identification and genetic analysis of seaweeds where bioinformatics knowledge was applied.
Mikael Espinoza is a student of the Master's program in Engineering Sciences, mention Chemistry, at the Universidad de Chile. He has experience in processing and integrating transcriptomic data into genome-scale metabolic models.
He is currently working on his thesis on the development of the genome-wide metabolic model of Macrocystis pyrifera under the supervision of Professor Ziomara Gerdtzen.
Cindy es bióloga, con mención en Hidrobiología y Pesquería de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), Perú. Actualmente cursa el Magister en Ciencias, mención Producción, Manejo y Conservación de Recursos Naturales, de la Universidad de Los Lagos (ULagos).
Se ha desempeñado en el área de Ecología Trófica, Dinámica de Poblaciones y Taxonomía de decápodos. Actualmente, trabaja en ciclos de vida y reproducción de Macrocystis pyrifera.
Gonzalo has a degree in Biotechnology from the Universidad de Antofagasta.
Currently, he is working on his master's thesis "Identification and characterization of the bacterial core in two microscopic stages of the life cycle of the holobiont Macrocystis pyrifera" under the supervision of Dr. Carolina Camus.
In his thesis, Gonzalo investigates the bacterial component present in the early stages of the development of Macrocystis (huiro) under the holobiont concept.
Viviane es licenciada en biotecnología, por la Universidad Latina de Panamá. Actualmente, cursa el programa de Magíster en Ciencias mención Genética en la Universidad Austral de Chile.
Anteriormente, laboró como asistente de investigación en la Universidad de Panamá haciendo cultivos in vitro de algas Kappaphycus alvarezii, introducidas al caribe panameño. También fue interna y becaria en el Instituto Smithsonian de Investigaciones Tropicales donde aplicó marcadores moleculares y ADN ambiental para estudiar los arrecifes coralinos del Pacífico Este Tropical de Panamá y Costa Rica.
Ahora, durante su participación en el Núcleo Milenio MASH, espera concretar su tesis de magíster centrado en comprender el efecto que ha tenido el cultivo antropogénico del pelillo (Gracilaria chilensis) sobre la composición y estructura de las comunidades bacterianas asociadas, dentro de este sistema holobionte: alga (G. chilensis) – microbioma.
Juan Pablo Olivos es estudiante de cuarto año de Biología Marina de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Es ayudante del curso Botánica Marina 2022. Durante el 2019 realizó una pasantía en la Estación Costera de Investigación Marina (ECIM) de Las Cruces, en dónde se acercó a ámbitos prácticos de la Biología Marina.
Se incorporó a principios del 2022 al equipo del Laboratorio de Algas UC del Dr. Sylvain Faugeron, en dónde está realizando un seminario de investigación en influencia de moléculas de quorum sensing producidas por las bacterias Gram- de Gracilaria chilensis en el desarrollo del alga Acrochaetium sp.
Faina es estudiante de pregrado de Ingeniería Civil en Biotecnología de la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas (FCFM) de la Universidad de Chile. Posee experiencia en simulación numérica de modelos matemáticos asociados a procesos químicos y biotecnológicos, siendo auxiliar del curso Métodos Matemáticos para Procesos.
Actualmente realiza su tesis en el desarrollo de un modelo metabólico a escala genómica para bacterias y el holobionte asociado a Macrocystis pyrifera, con la profesora Ziomara Gerdtzen.
Gabriela es estudiante de pregrado de la carrera de Biología Marina de la Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh). Durante sus estudios encontró el interés por las algas, debido a su gran capacidad adaptativa, además de su importancia como productores primarios.
Actualmente, está realizando su práctica profesional y tesis en la especie Macrocystis pyrifera, en el Centro i~mar de la ULagos, bajo la supervisión de la investigadora principal de MASH, Dra. Pamela Fernández. Debido a la gran dispersión que poseen estas algas, le generó curiosidad el poder seguir aprendiendo más acerca de esta especie.
Carlos es estudiante de pregrado de Ingeniería Ambiental en la Universidad Austral de Chile. Posee experiencias en diseño de plantas de tratamiento, cultivo de crustáceos y hongos en biorreactores, con énfasis en maximizar la eficiencia de los procesos y minimizar el impacto ambiental.
En la actualidad, se encuentra realizando su tesis bajo la supervisión del Dr. Pedro Murúa. Su objetivo es determinar las variables ambientales (luz y temperatura) óptimas para la proliferación de mareas verdes asociadas al cultivo de pelillo (Gracilaria chilensis).
Fernanda es Licenciada en Biología Marina de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC), durante su trayectoria académica, ha sido ayudante en cursos como Botánica Marina y Vertebrados Marinos, reforzando sus habilidades prácticas con una pasantía en la Estación Costera de Investigación Marina (ECIM) de Las Cruces. Su participación en el Laboratorio de Algas UC del Dr. Sylvain Faugeron la llevó a involucrarse en investigaciones sobre Macrosystis pyrifera, destacando su interés en la adaptación y ecología de macroalgas.
En la actualidad, se encuentra enfocada en el estudio de la biología molecular de Lessonia trabeculata, evaluando procesos de reclutamiento a través de marcadores microsatélites. Este trabajo, que está desarrollando bajo la dirección del profesor Sylvain Faugeron, ha sido presentado en el Congreso de Ciencias del Mar 2023 como resultados preliminares bajo el nombre “Estimación del éxito reproductivo en poblaciones de Lessonia trabeculata del norte de Chile sometidas a diferentes grados de extracción”, como parte de la tesis que está desarrollando.
Branco es estudiante en Biología Marina en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, actualmente en su quinto año de pregrado y trabajando para obtener su título profesional. Se unió al laboratorio de algas de la universidad en el segundo semestre de 2022 y está desarrollando su tesis bajo la tutela del Dr. Sylvain Faugeron. Su investigación se centra en el alga roja Gracilaria chilensis y el biofilm en su superficie, estudiando esta asociación como una unidad evolutiva conocida como «holobionte».
Desde que se incorporó al laboratorio, Branco ha adquirido habilidades en técnicas de mantenimiento y cultivo de algas. También participó en un seminario de investigación en el primer semestre de 2023, colaborando en un proyecto que incluyó el diseño experimental y la medición de parámetros fisiológicos en Gracilaria chilensis. Además, fue ayudante en el curso de Botánica Marina en 2023.
Nicolás es estudiante de Ingeniería Civil en Biotecnología en la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas (FCFM) de la Universidad de Chile. Su trayectoria académica y profesional le ha llevado a adquirir experiencia en el ámbito de la microbiología, específicamente en detección molecular, desempeñándose en el Área de Microbiología de Alimentos y Agua del Instituto de Salud Pública de Chile (ISPCh). Asimismo, ha mostrado su pasión por la enseñanza y la divulgación científica, ejerciendo como profesor auxiliar del curso Biología y Metabolismo Celular en la FCFM.
Recientemente, en 2023, Nicolás se unió al equipo del Laboratorio de Algas UC, bajo la dirección del Dr. Sylvain Faugeron. Allí, está enfocando sus esfuerzos en la investigación metagenómica de biopelículas asociadas a la alga Gracilaria chilensis, ampliando su conocimiento y contribución al campo de la biotecnología marina.
Diego es estudiante de cuarto año de Biología Marina en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, tuvo la oportunidad de sumergirse en el mundo de la investigación en 2022 con una pasantía en el Laboratorio de Algas UC, dirigido por el Dr. Sylvain Faugeron. Durante este período, adquirió habilidades en técnicas de cultivo de algas, colaborando estrechamente con la colección de cultivo del laboratorio. Su interés y compromiso con la academia se reflejó al asumir responsabilidades como ayudante en el curso «Genética y Evolución» en el primer semestre de 2023.
Recientemente, se integró de lleno al equipo del Laboratorio de Algas UC, dedicándose al aislamiento de epífitos de Gracilaria chilensis. En el presente, se encuentra inmerso en su seminario de investigación, donde examina el impacto de la comunidad bacteriana en respuestas biológicas, como fotosíntesis, tasa de crecimiento y uptake en Gracilaria chilensis frente a diversas fuentes de nitrógeno.
Andrea es una estudiante de Ingeniería Civil en Biotecnología de la Universidad de Chile, específicamente en la Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas. Su experiencia incluye trabajo en laboratorio y conocimientos en biología molecular. Andrea tiene un interés académico y profesional en áreas como la bioinformática y el modelamiento matemático de procesos químicos y biotecnológicos. Actualmente, participa en un proyecto de investigación sobre el ensamblaje y anotación de genomas de bacterias asociadas a Macrocystis pyrifera, colaborando con la profesora Ziomara Gerdtzen y el investigador postdoctoral Gustavo Rodriguez.
Camila is a research assistant at the Centro i~mar of the Universidad de Los Lagos. In that role, and based on her work in multiple research projects, she is currently an expert in the cultivation of seaweed.
She has participated in various specialization courses in the area and is a marine biologist from the Universidad de Los Lagos.
Jaime is an aquaculture engineer. He has carried out research activities in the laboratory, aimed at developing and optimizing molecular biology techniques in genetic characterization of mollusks, seaweeds, fish diseases and the development of new techniques for the aquaculture industry.
He is currently in charge of the Genetics Laboratory in the Centro i~mar of the Universidad de Los Lagos.
Jessica is an associate researcher at the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Universidad Católica de Chile. She also works as a teaching instructor for the Plant Biology and Marine Botany courses.
She is a professor of Biology and Natural Sciences by profession, with a degree in Biology. In her role as a researcher, she has participated in multiple research projects, publications, and specialization courses. She has overseen the training of assistant students, undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as students in research seminars and undergraduate theses. In addition, she served as curator of the collection of macroalgae cultures of the PUC, SEPA.
Genesis is a biotechnologist and works as a Research Assistant and lab-manager in the Environmental Microbiology and Ecogenomics Laboratory of the Centro GEMA of the Universidad Mayor, Santiago.
She has participated as co-author in different scientific publications, as well as in various congresses, always associated to microbiology.
Oscar has a Master's degree in Sciences, mention in Genetics, from the Universidad Austral de Chile. He is currently finishing his PhD in Biological Sciences, mention in Ecology, at the Macroalgae Laboratory-UC, under the supervision of Dr. Sylvain Faugeron. His work focuses on understanding the ecological and evolutionary processes on the diversity and genetic structure of macroalgae in the South Pacific Ocean, mainly Chile, using phylogeographic and population genomics approaches.
Especialista en Comunicaciones y Divulgación Científica, se ha centrado en hacer accesibles conceptos científicos a través de medios como podcast, videos, artículos y entrevistas. Posee habilidades en estrategias de comunicación, abarcando desde su implementación hasta su monitorización y evaluación. Tiene experiencia en la gestión de contenidos para medios digitales y redes sociales, además de competencias en comunicación interpersonal y pensamiento estratégico. Su trabajo está guiado por un firme compromiso con la educación y la conservación marina.
Camila is a commercial engineer, specializing in Strategic Planning and Management Control. She has worked in various areas and functions within the Universidad de Los Lagos, currently being head of Administration of the Centro i~mar.
Previously, he also worked as a teacher in different courses of the Public Accountant, Technician in Business Administration and Auditor degrees of Universidad de Lagos.
